Excellence in Improving Private Rented Sector Standards

Over the last 20 years, the private rented sector has grown to become the second largest tenure. The English Housing Survey shows that in 2016-17, 20% of households in England — that’s 4. 5 million — rent their home from a private landlord.

While 82% of private renters are satisfied with their home, it remains the case that conditions in the sector vary immensely. It tends to have the least energy efficient homes, partly due to the disproportionate number of older housing stock, while around a quarter of homes fail to meet the Decent Homes Standard.

While most landlords, large and small, strive to provide a professional service, standards of management and the quality of provision nevertheless remain inconsistent. Then there is the criminal landlords who knowingly rent out unsafe and substandard accommodation.
This award aims to recognise the hard work and the different methods used to raise standards in the private rented sector.

You may be a local authority team, you may be a housing association, a charity, or a partnership; you might be using a carrot and a stick to enforce standards, maybe you offer your managerial expertise, or assistance to improve properties, or demonstrate the effective use of the wide range of enforcement tools to raise the standards in your local area.

Whatever you are doing, we want to hear how you are helping the private rented sector up its game.
